This is a mini escape room about phonemes! As usual, the product images can explain this far better than words can. But here’s the summary:
- The solution to every puzzle is a specific phoneme—an individual spoken sound, like
/s/or/ă/. (How you arrive at this sound is obviously the actual puzzle.) - If Apprentices solved the puzzle, they get a SOCK showing that phoneme.
- When you’ve solved all 10 of the puzzles, you can combine all the socks to get a word! (That is, if you read all individual sounds one after another, it gives you a location that kids will recognize.)
Every puzzle applies one fun trick to get you playing around with phonemes and see them in a different way. They are obviously textless, simple, and small enough that multiple fit on one printed page. The goal is for Apprentices to have fun while practicing these skills, not to sit around a table being stumped for 15 minutes. We’ve designed the escape room such that you can leave out puzzles if you believe they’re too hard or would make the activity too long.
