This is a digital quiz (with 8 rounds of increasing difficulty) because it needs to play sound for almost every question! It does provide a physical version of the quiz to print out, but know that only about half the questions can be done without sound.
This is our longest/most involved quiz in all of Level 1 Language. Because there are a lot of phonemes in the English language, yes. But also because this is such a crucial last step before you’re ready to learn the alphabet. Because, in the end, every phoneme matches with a letter or a common letter combination.
That’s why this quiz approaches phonemes in many different ways. Counting them, comparing them, checking if they match another word, etcetera. In doing so, it makes sure the most common phonemes will be seen/heard plenty of times.
More uncommon phonemes (and their manipulation), though, can be found in the next resource: Quiz of Phonemes Advanced. We split these up because it’s no use overwhelming Apprentices by trying to introduce 20+ different phonemes at once!
The Teachers resource for this topic practices more or less the same things. In that resource, however, the Guardian and Apprentices have to make the sounds themselves of course, and it includes some extra activities/little games that a quiz can’t do.
