LEVEL 1

Crossgroups is a slight evolution of Box of Belonging. Don’t worry, you don’t need to have played that puzzle to understand this one.

Box of Belonging simply asked you to figure out the secret groups inside a list of images. You had to realize, for example, that 3 of the images were animals and 3 of them were furniture. A simple Grouping exercise for kids!

This puzzle takes it slightly further by placing those groups on a grid. Each row/column contains one of the groups you think you discovered. But rows and columns cross over, of course. And when they do … that square needs something that belongs to both groups.

And so you get practice doing this skill twice. Figure out the general groups, then figure out the two or three things that belong to multiple groups at once and should be at those crossroads squares.

As usual, this starts really simple. Tiny puzzles with only a few images to place. Then it scales up, and a few rules twists are added for even more excitement, until you’ve become a grouping master without realizing it.

You can play this game physically, by cutting out the unique images at each puzzle and placing them on the puzzle. You can also play by simply drawing the images you see into the spaces yourself. As long as you can somewhat recognize which of the images it’s supposed to be, it’s fine ;)

The final puzzles show you how much you’ve learned by solving these, as well as give a glimpse at what comes next by creating Crossgroups puzzles with numbers or letters. (Which is very very close to actual Crosswords puzzles, of course.)
