LEVEL 1

Crosscompare is probably the simplest and purest puzzle in our My First Comparisons topic. If your Apprentice is not used to puzzles, it’s probably best to start here. (This is true for most of our Crosswords-inspired puzzles, which are present in almost all topics.)

Every puzzle shows you a very small grid, like a tiny Crosswords. One or two rows crossing with one or two columns. Some parts may already be filled in.

Every row/column is a “meadow”. Your job is to make sure every meadow has at least a rabbit and a plant. It’s as simple as that, but you’ll realize you need to be smart about where you draw each to make sure it works out with how rows/columns cross over.

Pretty soon, of course, you will move to higher difficulties that add things like the tiger. They need to be in the same meadow as a bunny, otherwise they go hungry. Before you know it, you’re at the last puzzle and have learned many useful ways to compare and solve problems!

The puzzles are large and don’t require very specific drawings. You can use anything you want to represent “plant”, “planteater” and “meateater”. This allows young kids to play using rudimentary drawings.
