The name (and logo) of this puzzle says it all: Crossophone is a unique mix between the famous Crosswords puzzles and phonics. Instead of writing letters inside the squares, you place disks for every phoneme you hear in the word.
The first few puzzles have a single “special disk” which shows a specific phoneme. That one must be in the right place, of course, which usually means a square where two words cross over. Over time, puzzles get bigger, but the number of special disks you have (and know) grow too. Until, by the end, you are easily breaking words down into their exact sounds!
As expected, this is for pre-readers. All clues are given using clear, simple images of things that a young kid will recognize. That doesn’t mean they will know the word instantly, all times! Like all puzzles and games, this is also simply a way to expand vocabulary and expand your general knowledge.
We are very proud of this unique puzzle we invented. It’s definitely a puzzle that challenges you and makes you grow. But it’s also definitely doable for young kids learning about phonemes for the first time, because the grids are small, the images simple, and the fact their words cross over gives many (many) hints as you try to solve it.
