It’s a busy day at the beach. You brought … 8 beach blankets, for some reason. You just hope it will be enough, because the place is already packed and there’s a strict rule against overlapping other people’s blankets.
Can you turn most of the beach your color? While making sure your blankets have a path to the water, so your kids can run off to swim without stepping on sunbathers? Put your skills to the test on Blankety Beach!
This game, like most of our games, is textless and playable by young kids. The rules are a single page, games are short, and counting scores at the end is good math practice too. Every turn has one simple action—place a blanket—with the twist that the blanket has to have a path to the ocean. The more blankets you place, the more the beach turns your color, the more points you score. But if you don’t watch out … others will block all your access to the water and you can never place a valid blanket again. Which is, you know, not great for scoring.
It has several expansions that deepen the strategy and gameplay further, such as special blankets or the “ebb & flood” mechanic that washes away blankets that fly too close to the sun water. We highly recommend quickly enabling one or two of the first expansions, as they only add a few rules but make the game really shine. We only kept them out of the base game to make your very first game absolutely as simple as possible. Even with just the base game, you can play 6 different beach maps, making this simple blanket-placing puzzle different every time.
If you want, you can print the material on a larger size paper. This is especially useful for playing with young kids who can’t easily pick up and move smaller blankets, or who might accidentally blow/move material out of the way. We kept the base size small to have a “low footprint” (less ink and paper used, easy to take the game with you and play it anywhere, say, on holiday). But it works just as well on any other scale, and the PDF should allow doing so without pixelation/blurriness.
Have fun!

| Marrakech | This game originally inspired the idea of placing blankets, overlapping other blankets, then counting how much of your color still showed. In the end, Blankety Beach became a VERY different game. But I still wanted to mention Marrakech, because it’s simply a really small and fun game in its own right. |
