The Santa Express is a large and beautiful Christmas game for the whole family. You need to carve out some table space and some time, but in return you get a very thematic experience, possibly for large groups, about making sure the Polar Express reaches the North Pole.
Players try to create the most efficient train connections between important points to make sure Christmas is a success. Most of the time, this means making sure Elves end up at the North Pole for work, and gifts from the North Pole end up in family homes.
You can play together (“cooperative”) or against each other (“competitive”). Both versions have their pros and cons, but we decided, in true Christmas spirit, to make the cooperative version the “default” that’s taught first.
It requires cutting out quite some “train pawns” that players will be placing all over. If possible, we recommend printing these on thicker paper, or reinforcing them with cardboard, or simply using other household items. Because little paper trains are easily blown away / toppled over accidentally!
This game was clearly inspired by the great Ticket to Ride board games. It’s a heavily simplified, printable, Christmas-themed version that can also be played cooperatively (all together against the game). In fact, you can use the plastic trains from your own Ticket to Ride game (if you have one) to place on the train spaces! We made sure they were the same size.
