Description

Split your students into different “nations” that each try to be the first to land on the moon! Learn about history and space travel by simulating it in this Classroom Game.

Like all our Classroom Games, it’s played over multiple rounds in which everyone acts at the same time. Nobody is waiting on their turn. Nobody is forced to sit still. You don’t have to play the game all in one go—you can just play one round a week, for example, as a Friday afternoon reward for your students.

The game supports 6 nations (at most). Each nation is a group of at most 5 players, because there are 5 unique roles to play: Investor, Scientist, Engineer, Spy, and Astronaut.

Each role has one or two simple actions they can take. This has two advantages:

  • You barely need to teach rules before starting. The rules a player needs to remember are on their Role Card!
  • Everyone is actually playing all the time. For example, only the “Astronaut” is allowed to decide where their team’s spaceships move, not anyone else from the team!

Over the course of 10–20 rounds, players will research technology, build spaceships, and navigate the perilous path towards the moon in secret. Other teams will Spy on them, finding out how far along their spaceship is or stealing some technology they need. Or maybe your players are more cooperative, trading technology, becoming allies, lending money. Or maybe you quickly launch a cheap Satellite to try and sabotage another player before they get too far …

Everything is possible! Classroom Games were made to simulate a system as best as possible, so players can have fun while actually learning all the rich details and possible strategies. The entire rulebook is only a few pages long. Within those rules, players can try to win the Space Race any way they see fit. All in on technology? All in on diplomacy? All in on economy? Their choice. The good or bad consequences of their actions become clear the next round.

The expansions—also included for free—include elements that teach the specific history of the Space Race (between USA and SU) and a more educational space map (with black holes, asteroids, and more).

Use this game for an educational block about space or the space race. Use it for an immersive birthday party themed around space.

Have fun!

REMARK! Any feedback on these games is highly appreciated. Classroom Games are our own invention, very promising but also very experimental. It’s hard for us to really stress test a game that requires a large number of players over a large amount of time!

But that's just one way to teach and explore its topic(s)!

You can always move to a different Faction to find a more effective way to teach the same topic.

Charm: Classroom Game

This product is part of the Classroom Game charm.

Visit its main page to learn more about what that means. Below is a summary:

Classroom Games are educational games meant to be played with a large group, over many days, weeks or even months. You might call them larger-than-life board games.

They allow extremely immersive gameplay for large groups, centered on a topic like running your own company, and are ideal for classrooms or other repeated educational settings.

Spell: My First Adventures In Space

This resource is part of the My First Adventures In Space topic (or "spell").

To be frank, the only reason this topic is part of Level 2 is because most kids love the idea of space. The idea of exploring a galaxy, flying in a spaceship, finding magical new planets. The topic makes it easy to create lots of fun activities and games that naturally teach a lot about a variety of topics.

This resource also covers other topics. To keep things simple, the curriculum always considers the first topic listed to be the most important.

Try another approach?

The Faction (or "product type") of this product is Gamiverses.

This approach might work for some Apprentices but not for others! That's why we recommend exploring each topic in a variety of ways.

Maybe a (different) game works better? Or a quiz, story, or escape room? Below are some random suggestions.
