I Donut Remember is a fun game that teaches memory and visual discrimination in equal measure.
Memory, both short-term and long-term, is one of the major areas that physical or mental exercise can train exceptionally well. It lends itself to games easily, as the only rule is “remember this”. At the same time, memory is of course a crucial skill for maintaining all other skills.
In this game, it’s all mental exercise. I wanted to create a game that was a little more interesting than your typical memory game, without making it any more complicated. And I think I succeeded by attaching a memory game to a cooperative cooking game!
- On your turn, you’re not just trying to find two matching icons. No, you try to complete a recipe.
- On the one hand, this makes it easier. You succeed by finding any one ingredient of the recipe, order doesn’t matter.
- On the other hand, as the recipe gets closer to being done, it becomes harder and harder. Players will need to help each other to make sure the recipe doesn’t fail at the final ingredient. It might be wise to leave that final ingredient to the one with the strongest memory, for example.
The base game is as simple as that, which makes it playable with young kids. Remember where ingredients are and reveal them to complete simple recipes.
Once familiar with that, though, you can move on to the Upgrades. They add rules that require even better teamwork, a way to lose the game, a way to play competitively, a version that teaches counting and addition too, and more.
This ended up being probably one of the “biggest” games of Level 1 Mathematics. The game is so simple yet so powerful that we kept finding new upgrades to add, kept growing the list of recipes, kept adding little icons and twists to keep it interesting long-term. We truly believe that this game will be enjoyable to all ages and warrant a lot of repeat plays.
Have fun!
