This product contains the board game Court of King Triangle. That name will ring familiar to anyone who has also enjoyed our book The Shapesquare Stories, as King Triangle is the big villain there! If you haven’t, don’t worry, you can easily play the game without knowing the story behind it.
With 1 page of very simple rules, this game tests basic shape knowledge, and polygons in particular. One person plays “King Triangle” who tries to reduce corners all the time, hoping to turn all palaces into triangles. Everyone else plays the “Rebelshapes” who try to add corners all the time, hoping to turn palaces into circles. By playing simple combinations of shapes from your hand, this fight goes on until all palaces have been won by one side, and those who’ve captured the most palaces win the game.
Now you already know the game! While playing, you get constant opportunities to recognize shapes, say their names, and count how many corners they have. There’s also a wide variety of palaces to play and expansions to enable if the base game becomes boring.
Here’s a nice extra rule to try once you’ve played the base game: “When you remove a Palace, draw 3 more cards and give them to any player(s). They’ll simply have more hand cards until the moment they dip below 4 again.”
Another nice variation brought to our attention is the following: “Give each player their own Palace. On your turn, you may always play one or more hand cards to your own palace, and they will stay there until you fulfill its pattern. (Unlike all other palaces where you have to play the entire thing at once in the same turn.)”
