The Tumbletail Games is a legendary event. It attracts creatures large and small, slow and fast, from all over the world. They compete in a wide array of imaginative sports that no human has ever heard of, but which are certainly exciting.
This book follows the most famous and tense instance of The Tumbletail Games there ever was! At least, according to some animals. Because this year, something special was given to the winners. Something so valuable and nice, that animals started cheating to try and win. Follow a monkey as he tries to prove that this is happening before things get too dangerous—and tries to find motivation to keep playing even if he can never win.
It’s a story about about following rules versus cheating, and why playing sports is healthy and more important than you think.
It contains 10 short stories (or more like “chapters”). Each one …
- Is quite short and standalone (2,000 words). This allows you to read a quick one before bedtime or at the end of class.
- Shows off a new magical sport.
- Has a “soft break” in the middle, in case it’s too long and you want to break it into two. (Because the stories show a lot of “action”—magical sports being played—chapters are about twice as long as we’d usually write them for this age range.)
- If you read them all, in order, you get a bigger story and experience the games from start to finish.
Most importantly, the book includes physical games! We invented many magical and fantastical sports for these animals to play in the story. Of course, in real life you don’t have the magic, nor are Apprentices tigers and lions and bears. But we designed the sports so that we could easily “adapt” it into an actual physical game that kids can play. These games are explained within the book itself, with simple drawings and diagrams, when they first appear.
In short, The Tumbletail Games is a bundle of fairy tales for (young) kids about a magical version of the Olympic Games. And once they’re excited by the story, the book explains how to play the same game in your own backyard.
