The Whimsylympics is a special event. It attracts creatures large and small, slow and fast, from all over the world. They compete in a wide array of imaginative sports that no human has ever heard of, but which are certainly exciting.
This book shows you how it all started. It shows you the funny sports, the legendary athletes breaking records, and the tiny animal without wings who wanted to play a bird sport anyway.
It contains 10 standalone short stories. In each story, we meet a new animal who plays a new magical sport. We follow them as they try to solve a problem and win (or not). There’s a slight overarching story in the sense that all of these things happen at the same Whimsylympics. But every story (~1,000) is meant to be read to your children as a standalone story, in whatever order / at whatever pace.
Most importantly, the book includes physical games! We invented many fantastical sports for these animals to play in the story. Of course, in real life you don’t have the magic, nor are Apprentices tigers and bears. But we designed the sports so that we could easily “adapt” it into an actual physical game that kids can play. These games are explained within the book itself, with simple drawings and diagrams, when they first appear.
In short, the Whimsylympics is a bundle of fairy tales for young kids about a magical version of the Olympic Games. And once they’re excited by the story, the book explains how to play the same game in your own backyard.
