Busy Books are bundles of exercises, challenges and (solo) activities around a certain topic or theme.
It differs from “lesson material” in the sense that there is no explaining going on. It only contains exercises and advanced challenges, testing your knowledge and skills in many different ways.
As the name suggests, it usually contains a large collection of such challenges (it’s a book/bundle), and it’s designed to keep kids busy for a while.
Why would I be interested?
Below are some of the biggest advantages of Busy Books.
- They offer a wider variety of challenges than the Lesson material.
- They offer harder challenges than the Lesson Material.
- They are often themed, such as a Christmas Busy Book. This is an ideal way to keep your kids active and learning, even when not at school (or when you are needed somewhere else).
- They are cost-effective way to get a lot of learning opportunities at once.
Why would I not be interested?
Below are some of the biggest disadvantages of Busy Books.
- Because there is no actual teaching going on, some challenges might just be impossible. A kid might not understand what is even required of them, or they miss the crucial knowledge to do the thing. Especially at level 1 and 2, a Guardian to regularly ask if they need help is probably a necessity.
- If you really liked a challenge, then you might be disappointed that … it doesn’t return. The Busy Book has a different kind of challenge at every page. Every page tests your knowledge about a topic/theme in a different way.
- Our Busy Books usually contains pen and paper challenges (50%) and challenges that require cutting something out (50%). If a kid struggles with holding a pen, or you don’t have scissors nearby, then you’ll miss out on a lot.
- Such “challenges” are often less effective, more boring and more isolating than other things that could keep kids busy. Such as our quizzes, or puzzles, or games. Many kids love busy books and will gladly do the whole thing, but please remember that some kids absolutely hate this and want something more interactive.
